Now a certain man found Joseph, and saw that he was wandering around and had lost his way in the field; so the man asked him, “What are you looking for?” He said, “I am looking for my brothers. Please tell me where they are pasturing our flocks.” Then the man said, “[They were here, but] they have moved on from this place. I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan. Genesis 37:15-17 (AMP)
The context of this verse is that Israel sent Joseph to check on his brothers who were pasturing their father’s flock in Shechem. He most certainly intended for Joseph and his brothers to mend their relationship having seen their hatred towards him. So Joseph obeyed and was on his way to see his brothers, but he got lost. He started wandering until a certain man found him. Now this is very interesting. The certain man here is a new character to the story of Joseph, he happens to have no name, yet his presence is vital, guiding and directing Joseph who happened to be lost. This unnamed helper, my friend, is the Holy Spirit. He is the unnamed helper.
Jesus reveals his like this:
“But when the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of Truth who comes from the Father, He will testify and bear witness about Me. (John 15:26 AMP)
The word Helper in the original Greek language, which the new testament is written in, is paracletos which means one called alongside to help. The Holy Spirit is the divine Helper, He never calls attention to Himself, instead He glorifies Jesus Christ. This is the reason why He is the unnamed Helper.
All throughout the Bible we see Him, in the Old testament He is hidden as the unnamed Helper. For example in the story of Abraham, He is the unnamed servant who is sent to get a wife for Isaac. He always present to help us and guide us all the best pathway for our lives as He did with Joseph.
Joseph was lost and wandering until the “certain man” found him, only to direct him to where his brothers were. The certain man saw Joseph, this means He was actively observing him, although Joseph was not aware. He also said, “[They were here, but] they have moved on from this place. I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” Looks like he was not only present with Joseph but He was also present when his brothers were pasturing the flock. He was so close to them that He had them discuss their move to Dothan.
God is omnipresent meaning He is everywhere, the Holy Spirit is God, He is the third person in the Trinity. Once we make Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour, we are joined into the family of God, He becomes our Father and we are called the children of God and the bride of Christ Jesus. Thereafter the Holy Spirit, like an engagement ring acts as a promise to the bride to be, so is the Holy Spirit to us. He comes into our heart, He lives in us, guiding and directing us in our lives and it is completely up to us, whether we choose to obey him or not. The bible puts it like this:
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you [who are willing to learn] with My eye upon you. Do not be like the horse or like the mule which have no understanding, Whose trappings include bridle and rein to hold them in check, Otherwise they will not come near to you. (Psalm 32: 8-9 AMP)
• The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Trinity, He is God.
• The Holy Spirit is the unnamed Helper who guides us graciously
• The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ, He never calls attention to Himself that is why He is the unnamed Helper.
