Now Israel (Jacob) loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a [distinctive] multi-coloured tunic. His brothers saw that their father loved Joseph more than all of his brothers; so they hated him and could not [find it within themselves to] speak to him on friendly terms. (Genesis 37:3-4 AMP)
The story Joseph reveals how much his Father Israel (who was previously named Jacob) loved him more than all the other brothers this was because Joseph was the son of his old age. But loving a person is never enough not unless you demonstrate it by giving. Our Heavenly Father leads by example-
“For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world, that He [even] GAVE His [One and] only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Savior] shall not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16 AMP)
Love gives to object of its love and affection. It is no wonder Israel made a beautiful multi-coloured tunic to gift the one he loved most, Joseph. This act of affection and extravagant gift giving by their father towards Joseph was not received well by his other older brothers. They were furious and jealous of Joseph. This multi-coloured tunic would forever remind them that their father loved Joseph more. The bible records
…so they hated him and could not [find it within themselves to] speak to him on friendly terms.(Genesis 37:4)
This story seem quite familiar with the story of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was and is the only begotten of the Father who is in the intimate presence of the Father, the message translation says He exists at the very heart of the Father (John1:18). During the baptism and transfiguration of Jesus Christ, our Heavenly Father was not shy about declaring His love for His One and only begotten Son:
…behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased and delighted!” (Matthew 3:17 AMP)
While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased and delighted! Listen to Him!” (Matthew 17:5 AMP)
It is no wonder His Jewish brothers the scribes and Pharisees passionately hated Him and sought to kill him. Beloved, just as Joseph was loged by his Father and gifted a multi-coloured coat, you are also loved by Your Heavenly Father that is why He gifted you His only begotten Son. Meditate on this truth today.
You are deeply loved by God and He demonstrates this by giving His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.
