Now the boy Samuel was attending to the service of the Lord under the supervision of Eli. The word of the Lord was rare and precious in those days; visions [that is, new revelations of divine truth] were not widespread. Yet it happened at that time, as Eli was lying down in his own place (now his eyesight had begun to grow dim and he could not see well). and the [oil] lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, that the Lord called Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.”
He ran to Eli and said,

“Here I am, for you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call you; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. Then the Lord called yet again, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But Eli answered, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.”

Now Samuel did not yet know [or personally experience] the Lord, and the word of the Lord was not yet revealed [directly] to him. So the Lord called Samuel a third time. And he stood and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you did call me.” Then Eli understood that it was the Lord [who was] calling the boy. So Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and it shall be that if He calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Then the Lord came and stood and called as at the previous times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” The Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will ring.

Todays devotion is such a treat from the Lord, He demonstrates that regardless of our inexperience with Him, those who passionately seek Him, He reveals Himself to them and than He shows them His revelation secrets.

Now in this verses Samuel was still a young boy and he served the Lord under Eli the priest’s supervision. During this time, Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas also served the Lord but the bible records how the were worthless dishonorable, unprincipled men. This is because among others ill behaviours to God, they did not honour and respect God so they stole from God the best sacrifices.

Stealing from God, was the same sin the enemy, Lucifer did. He attempted to steal God’s glory and he was thrown out of heaven into the earth along with all his followers in heaven then. Eli’s sons were clearly under the inspiration of the enemy and their father never rebuked them, not once. Infact by keeping silent he enabled their behaviours. The Priest Eli was so compromising on God’s standards that he chose his sons rather than the Lord. Just imagine, how it like in those days no wonder the word of God was rare in those days and Eli eyes grew dim and he could not see well.

However, despite all the blasphemy going on in the house of the Lord, Samuel still attended to the service of the Lord, under a corrupt priest. He served the Lord and best of all, he slept in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. His bedroom was in the Holy of Holies!! How awesome is that!!!

The holy of Holies is the inner most chamber in the temple of God. In it lies the Only the ark of the Covenant from which the very presences of God is found in between the two cherubs. We can graciously say that Samuel as a boy was roomates with God. Remember only the High Priest cisited the holy of holies during Yomkipur because it was the day where all their sins were attoned for by sprinkling the blood of the sacrifice on the mercy seat.

Samuel though he had no prior personal experience with the Lord, he heard His voice unlike Eli who had apeior experience with the Lord but the Lord no longer talked to him because of he failed as a high priest.

Let this encourage you today, to draw near to the Lord, and just like young Samuel the Lord will personally seek you out , He is a personal God, He will call uou specifically by name and show you great and mighty things not yet seen.

Meditate on: There’s a private place reserved for the lovers of God, where they sit near him and receive the revelation-secrets of his promises.(Psalm 25:14)
